Many people find doing them infuriatingly precise and so very slow, so there are lots of people who avoid doing it like the plague, but it's those two features that I like, perhaps because for me this sort of task is a stress reliever. It's small scale, I can control it, and the result is pretty. :}

For Regency projects I pretty much handsew everything anyway. Again, I like the control, the feel of the fabric in my fingers, the slight puckering in the result that subtly says "handsewn". Plus, it's eminently portable.

It's a different story with other eras. For Edwardian? The treadle is my very good friend. :}

Very best,

NatalieZipZiphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02086335016901683883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18213663.post-67088519380195453402011-04-17T19:15:25.283-04:002011-04-17T19:15:25.283-04:00It looks very similair to cartridge pleating excep...It looks very similair to cartridge pleating except for the way you attach it to the waist band. I've always avoided cartridge pleating just because of the time of handsewing, I'm not a big fan.Katy Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06591325070647267488noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18213663.post-11279241615474029452009-12-03T13:24:39.805-05:002009-12-03T13:24:39.805-05:00Dear Sarah Jane,

No, not yet, and maybe never :}

Really, stroked gathers are a lot like gauguing, and can be a pleasure to do, in that as you focus on the work, the rest of your mind can relax. That is, if the tads are asleep. When they're awake I do not attempt detail work :}

Very best,
NatalieZipZiphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02086335016901683883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18213663.post-31688646613815992782009-12-02T18:38:03.112-05:002009-12-02T18:38:03.112-05:00You put my poor petticoats to shame! Thanks for explaining the process so very clearly. I've only used stroked gathers on small things before, never anything with lots of gathering like a petticoat. I will need to try this over the winter as my last petticoat is now biting the dust.Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06713535191616985475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18213663.post-35223351833200907442009-11-30T15:00:12.116-05:002009-11-30T15:00:12.116-05:00Thank you, everyone! If you like delicate handwork, such as embroidery or beading, you may truly enjoy doing stroked gathers.

Aloha Aroha, indeed, stroked gathers are a close relative of gauging! if you can gauge, you can do this easily. It's just on a much smaller scale, and without a turn of the fabric at the top.

Many thanks again,

NatalieZipZiphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02086335016901683883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18213663.post-16949069371922748162009-11-23T15:39:01.288-05:002009-11-23T15:39:01.288-05:00Great job on the stitching and this tutorial!
